Inspirational Young Person of the Year

Rory Goss was honoured to receive the Inspirational Young Person Award at the Youth & Future Talent Awards (YAFTAs), held at Killeavy Castle Estate.

The award recognised Rory’s resilience, determination and positive contribution following a life-changing diagnosis of Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, which caused him to lose nearly all of his vision in a short period of time.

This recognition was especially meaningful to Rory because it reflected not only his personal achievements, but also the support, encouragement and belief of the people around him. Rory expressed his gratitude to his family, friends, principal, teachers, Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar School for their support throughout his journey. He also was very appreciative of the work that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Education Authority Youth Service did to run such a successful event.

Winning this award marked an important moment in Rory’s story - a reminder that challenge can lead to growth, that support can make a lasting difference and that young people have the power to inspire others through courage, perseverance, and hope.
